What is a Health Coach?

Here it is, guys! My first, official Live Love Leesh blog post, I’m so excited!

I’ve been brainstorming blog topic ideas for months now, but I decided that it would be festive, since last week was National Health Coach week (yeah, it's a thing), to start with this one: What is a Health Coach?!

If you’re reading this right now, you probably know that I am a health & wellness coach, but what you might not know is: what that means. Put simply, a health coach is a wellness professional that provides support, resources and accountability to clients that want to live a healthier, happier life.

The current state of health around the world is really not that great. In fact, for the first time in our recorded history, it is predicted that children will not live to be as old as their parents… No sugar-coating here, that straight-up sucks. There's a whole slew of reasons for this, but one of the largest is poor nutrition. So many people simply don’t know how to eat anymore. There are issues with access to nutritious food, there's a severe lack of nutrition understanding, and then, of course, there’s the lure of the food industry’s best (most deceitful) marketing techniques. These things aren’t the fault of people, they're just the result of circumstances. There are so many of us that just don’t have the resources or understanding that we need to live a healthful life. That’s where a health coach comes in.

Most of us have a doctor and some of us might even see a nutritionist/dietician. A health coach does not replace either of these, instead they serve as an incredibly valuable supplement to these. On average, people see their doctor almost three times per year. While you're at the doctor you might get some advice about diet, and/or exercise, and if you do it's likely a broad statement like "you should try to be more active" or "make sure you're eating foods with iron.” This is great advice and maybe your doctor gives you even better advice, but either way hearing it only a couple times a year isn't really going to help you do it. Most of us just don't see our doctors frequently enough to truly benefit from all of their knowledge, as it pertains to our general wellness and lifestyle.

Let’s put it this way: a doctor is like a teacher, and a health coach is like a tutor. The teacher is the expert that gives you the information, the exams, and let's you know how you're doing. The tutor excels in the subject and has the time to meet with you 1-on-1, to help you execute and succeed. Now, when it comes to school not everyone needs a tutor, in fact many people are able to succeed based on what they learn in class from their teacher. But, imagine if students only saw their teacher a couple times a year…test scores, and overall understanding of subjects would eventually begin to decline - that’s what’s happening to our health. The way that the food industry, and American lifestyles have evolved over the years has created a need for a some extra guidance when it comes to our health.

A health coach helps you to identify and set personal goals, then they provide you with support, and guidance in taking the steps towards achieving those goals. One of the biggest benefits to hiring a health coach is accountability; sometimes the biggest challenge standing between a person and their goal(s) is their inability to commit to their own progress. Your health coach will always be on ”Team You” even when you aren’t, and they’ll help get you back on “Team You” ...and stay there.

A health coach isn’t going to give you some strict diet and shame you into staying on it. They aren’t going to tell you to never ever ever eat your favorite food again (that’s just silly). They aren’t going to tell you to replace your meals with some mediocre-tasting powder drink (news alert: that shit’s not food). They aren’t going to pressure you into going for a run everyday if you hate running, and they aren’t going to tell you how many calories to consume so that you’re stuck calculating at every meal. A health coach can help you to make changes in your life that will actually stick and even feel good. They can help you to listen to your body, to evaluate and approach your biggest challenges, and to take control of your life.

Just like with finding a tutor for the specific subject you are struggling in, there are health coaches for all different struggles in life and in health. So if you think you need that extra bit of guidance, get out there and find the health coach for you!
